Mangonel-type catapults (or a Ballista) were used to fling objects over castle walls for defense in medieval times.
All aspects of assembly and performance of this catapult are easy and fast to adjust:- the amount of leverage the throwing arm has, the trajectory angle and the power applied by the elastic band making this ideal for class competitions. Pull back the arm and let the ping pong ball fly!. Students can learn about movement, triangulation, force, stored power, potential energy trajectory, competition, testing, accuracy, calibration, stability, elastic power.
Construct the catapult in one class and then fold it flat to store or take home. For the next class, have the students test the catapult and hold a competition. As a competition, start by placing a box to catch the balls a distance of 3 meters away from the catapult and see if you can get the balls into it. You can make up your own rules. Users can adjust angle, the force used to get the best result.
